Food Delivery Apps Are On the Rise
The global pandemic rocked the entire restaurant industry. Over the past year, in-person dining dropped precipitously. Instead, hungry customers began ordering meals to their homes through food delivery apps.
The data backs up this shifting trend. Researchers estimate that by 2023, nearly 54 million people will use mobile food delivery apps. They’re also spending more money when they order online – 25% of consumers say they spend more on off-premise orders than they would in a restaurant. A survey by Technomic found that 60% of restauranteurs reported an increase in sales thanks to new delivery offerings – and that was back in 2018.
Needless to say, there’s a lot of profit to be had in the online ordering space. But exactly how many food delivery apps do your customers have to choose from?
How Many Food Delivery Apps Are There?
The truth is, it’s difficult to pin down an exact number. It seems like a new food delivery startup pops up every day. We do have official numbers from ResearchAndMarkets.com, which mentions over 30 different services in their 2020 industry report. Some of these exist under the umbrellas of larger businesses (fun fact, Pizza Hut was the first company to offer online ordering back in 1994). Others are the widely used apps you’re probably familiar with.
Which App is the Most Successful?
Business of Apps has analyzed the earnings of major food delivery companies. As of September 2021, the top contenders are:
With operations on six continents, Uber Eats ranks first or second in gross orders for most countries worldwide.
Americans may not be familiar with this app, but it is the clear frontrunner in the United Kingdom and most of Europe. Interestingly, this company also owns stakes in iFood (a Brazilian food aggregator).
The original aggregator! Up until 2018, Grubhub and Seamless controlled more than 50% of online food delivery in the United States.
This European service is responsible for most deliveries in the Netherlands, Belgium, and Germany.
DoorDash is the current leader in the American foodscape. They were the original pioneers of the platform-to-consumer model, which helped them to stand out from competitors.
Postmates was acquired by Uber Eats in 2019. It is responsible for roughly 10% of American food deliveries.
The UK’s answer to DoorDash, Deliveroo now operates in 13 different countries.
This company has a wide reach thanks to its numerous subsidiaries, which include Food Panda. They control platforms in more than 40 countries.
Ele.me is one of the two top food delivery apps in China. Today, it has over 200 million users.
The other major service in China, Meituan Dianping’s largest stakeholder is Tencent.
Other Noteworthy Apps
China and the United States are the two countries that use food delivery apps the most. Other parts of the world have developed their own apps to cater to their areas. These include Rappi (South America), Jumia Food (Africa), Damae-Can (Japan), iFood (Brazil), Zomato (India), and Yandex.Eda (Russia).
